Escherichia coli (E. coli) is among the most frequent causes of food related diarrhea. Most E. coli strains are under normal circumstances harmless and part of the indigenous intestinal flora in warm-blooded organisms, but some serotypes can cause serious food poisoning in humans, and are occasionally responsible for product recalls. Big outbreaks in the industrialized world have proved the need for serotyping of E. coli as a base for proper diagnosis, identification, surveillance, and food control.

For more than 80 years, SSI Diagnostica Group through its Staten’s Serum Institut roots (for some time via the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Escherichia and Klebsiella) has been engaged in the development of the E. coli typing system and in the production of E. coli antisera.

Via our TECHLAB portfolio, we provide diagnostic solutions for detecting Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC, also known verotoxin-producing E.coli, VTEC), which can cause severe foodborne illnesses such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Our tests, rapidly identify Shiga toxins 1 and 2 in fecal samples or cultures, helping prevent outbreaks and secondary transmission.
