Clinical relevance 

Streptococcus pneumoniae expresses a number of different sugars on the cell surface. Most sugars are  the cell capsule, which defines the pneumococcal serotypes currently known. The capsule are used in existing vaccines, conjugate vaccine  and in pure sugar vaccines target for adults. 

In addition to the type‑specific capsule sugars, all pneumococci also express a group antigen, referred to as the cell wall polysaccharide (CWPS). CWPS is found in two different forms, depending on the quantity of phosphorylcholine per sugar unit.    

How to use 

• Patient with symptoms of urinary track infection (UTI) provides an urinary sample

• Mark the sample with patients name and date of collection

• The urinary sample is added to agar in the Flexicult^® plate by a pipette – 0,3 mL in the big field for counting and 0,1 mL in the fields of antibiotics.

• Tilt the plate to divide the urine all over the fields.

• Add the lid and incubate the plate bottom up at 35 °C over night.

• Interpret the plate after 16-24 hours
