Pneumococcus anti CWPS serum
All pneumococci have a cell wall polysaccharide (CWPS) which is species specific. CWPS consists of phosphorylcholine and may sometimes be concealed beneath the capsule around the pneumococcus.
Product description
Anti CWPS serum consist of polyclonal rabbit antibodies. The product reacts with all 92 documented serotypes and is supplied in a vial with 1 mL ready-to-use antiserum, sufficient for approx. 300 tests.
How to use
Equal quantities of antiserum and bacterial culture are mixed on a slide. Under a phase contrast microscope or on a slide, a positive reaction is indicated by agglutination. If the CWPS is concealed beneath the capsule around the pneumococcus, no reaction is seen. A positive reaction in the Neufeld test can be difficult to see using anti CWPS serum for some isolates/strains. If that is the case, a slide agglutination test can be used with such strains when using the anti CWPS serum.
